Allysa Rhys Grayda – Accountant
Hello, I am Allysa and I graduated Bachelor of Science in Accountancy back in 2011. I am the eldest in the family and live with my parents.
We had our financial struggles before and after I finished college. Good thing there are lots of organisations for undergraduates like scholarships that provide financial support for your academic needs, and I’m fortunate to have joined those programs.
Even though I had a chance to be a scholastic alumnus, we still experienced financial difficulty, especially when my father resigned from his work. Also, my mother got sick, and we restricted her from being involved in strenuous activities because of her health condition. Being sick is very costly especially with hospital bills and the medication that needs to be maintained and it’s a problem for us to add those expenses since we didn’t have any contingency funds previously.
Accountancy was not my first choice. I was more inclined to Science from Elementary to High School. Being pragmatic, I took an alternative course. And all the stress/hassle of being a student was experienced during my senior year. When I knew that I failed in one of my major subjects, I was disappointed in myself. But it strengthened me and I strived harder to receive my diploma within the same year. Luckily, despite being delayed, I made it to our graduation in 2011, just months away from the regular commencement. With the help of all the supportive and generous people around me, along with my family, I made it all the way through.
I’ve been in the outsourcing industry for several years now. By this, I have equipped myself to navigate through different online platforms such as Xero, Quickbooks, Sage 50, NAV, SAP, Bill.com, etc. I started my career as an accounting assistant in 2011 where I performed bookkeeping duties and month-end close procedures. Then in 2013 I moved up to a Senior Associate post and was involved in training new members, process improvements, reporting and escalations. In 2016 I held an Accountant 2 position in a different company, which was more focused on accounts receivable. I am diligent, detail-oriented, can work independently and I am willing to take the initiative to meet reporting deadlines.
I was with my first employer for around 5 years, then I got my second job under my second employer for about 3 years. I’m pursuing my career as a remote worker, especially for bookkeeping/accounting tasks. I pushed through to securing an online career because of the traffic here in the Philippines. Since the traffic is getting worse, I thought of a way that can replace my 9-5 job. So, thanks to technology and experience with the outsourcing environment I was able to pull it all together by working virtually.
I got my first ever freelance online job in 2018. I like to learn new tools and know the dynamics of using those platforms with the application of all the knowledge I gained over the years, that’s why I ventured to work remotely. With my experiences, I also learned that open communication and strong coordination are key factors to resolve any issues, particularly with this kind of environment where tasks and instructions are set through online tools.
I am happy where I am now and enjoying the perks of staying at home while working online at the same time. What I hope for in this virtual career journey is to get a permanent/stable client with a competitive benefits/salary.
