Christene Mae C. Sanguenza – Web Design and Marketing Assistant
I do believe in the saying that “In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity”.
Let’s all admit that looking for a job is realistically hard, especially when it’s your first time or even right after you’ve graduated from college. It is then that we begin thinking of how we can start living our own lives.
My name is Christene Mae Sanguenza. I am 26 years old and a graduate of Bachelor of Information Technology from the University of Cebu.
Growing up with parents whose standards are ridiculously high and of a practical nature, it has been a battle for me since I was a child. Looking back at those days, I can’t imagine how I was able to contain all the lessons they taught me from the beginning up to now. I am who I am today because of my parents and it is truly beyond compare.
Creating curriculum vitae with an empty experience is quite odd, but normal as I’ve just graduated – regardless of getting On-Job Training. I applied to multiple companies including BPO’s but unfortunately have not yet landed the job that I want.
Then a friend referred me to his company and they called me for an interview. I was quite nervous thinking I might fail, but I did my best to remain positive whatever the outcome may be. Fortunately, I was hired as a Remote Desktop Specialist. At first, I didn’t have any idea what job entailed but I remained optimistic and thankful that I was now employed. I challenged myself to take the job seriously, went to training and discovered (with much delight) that the job related closely to my Bachelor’s Degree.
I was a Virtual Customer Service Representative through chat support, where I can remotely access a client’s computer and fulfill the listed tasks that the customer requires. Whether it’s troubleshooting the PC, installing software, emailing clients, encoding contents, researching, creating reports and other admin tasks.
I was awarded as one of the top employees over the months I worked for that company. But sadly, I decided to end the opportunity because I couldn’t see myself growing and I really had no guarantee of remaining as a regular employee as the company only offered contractual based project. I resigned believing there are better opportunities out there. I just need to go that extra mile to achieve success.
Work by heart not by sight…
After I resigned from my previous job I began applying to BPO’s here in Cebu. I underwent the training but still couldn’t see myself working with the positions I applied for. It’s been a challenge because my ego has been saying that I should get a job based on what I graduated with. But time was passing and being jobless and earning nothing spurred me into doing something for myself. My parents began pointing out negative things about me and my life status… and I came to the point where I was plagued by visions of me being old and jobless – a thoroughly disturbing thought! I quickly saw the need for me to get up and look for another opportunities… and while I’m still young! 🙂
Then in December 2015, as I was searching for jobs online I saw this hosting company who was looking for a developer or IT admin. It was a little confusing for me as I had no experience with the job posting and I didn’t know if I’d make the cut or not. I was scared I might be rejected again. But I had this need to make up for myself and my family – make them proud of me. So I kept reading motivational books to make me feel better and boost my confidence.
The phrase that struck me most during my reading was: “In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity”. And this is literally true!
The next day, I sent in my application form from the job posting online.
However, by the time they called me the positions posted were already filled… but they offered me another position as a Business Development Specialist (sales). At first I hesitated as I had zero experience at selling, but then I looked upon the opportunity as a challenge. I knew I could acquire knowledge and skills and decided to give it a try.
I worked 4 months at a comfortable pace. It was a good learning experience as I needed to adjust to different clients with different personalities over the phone. Who would have thought I was able to achieve the monthly KPI in our department! I was so engrossed in my work that I didn’t notice that I was already enjoying my position!
As time went by I decided to step up a little, and was introduced to the Marketing team. They offered me this new position which I jumped at. I learned new skills and took on handling Google Ads (PPC Specialist) as well as Social Media Marketing. I worked in this role for about 18 months, but was really eager to take on more. I decided to take another step up and was hired as WordPress Project Manager in the Development Team.
Customer service has become second nature for me and I have gained a lot of skills and learnings over the years. I am beyond grateful for what I have become and what I can achieve. You just need to follow your heart and not just where things might lead you. Sometimes, in life we need to have perseverance and focus on the positive things that are going on with our lives.
We don’t know what our future holds us, be we know how to create our future.
Right now, I am currently looking for new opportunities or perhaps a job that would help me grow as a professional individual.
It is my pleasure to help and assist you with your needs!
