Overview
Jaime Camacho – Customer Service Representative
My name is Jaime Camacho, but you can call me Jim. I’m happily married and have two kids. I graduated with a degree in Marine Engineering, which I worked hard for. After I finished school, I did my internship at a local company in my country, working on a cargo ship that travelled to Mindanao in the Philippines. It was exciting, and I learned a lot, but I had to leave early because the route became dangerous due to conflicts with local terrorists.
After returning home, I was out of work for a few months, which was tough. I wanted to start my career, so I decided to look for jobs outside my field. I felt nervous but wanted to experience being an adult and support my family.
I applied to be a call center agent, which was new for me. The first week was hard, and I faced many rejections, often at the last stage of the hiring process. It was discouraging, but I didn’t give up. Eventually, I got hired for a seasonal position, and I was excited to start. My goal was to find part-time work to help me adjust from being a student to an adult.
As I got used to my role, I quickly adapted to the BPO industry in the Philippines. I enjoyed the dynamic environment and later found a second job with a well-known BPO company, where I worked for almost a year. I then resigned to return to working on ships. However, after my contract ended and while waiting for another opportunity, I needed to keep earning, so I applied for a seasonal job to have some income.
Just when I was about to start a new contract, the pandemic hit, and I couldn’t go back to the ship. I began looking for jobs online and was lucky to find one in social media management. This job showed me the benefits of working from home, like being close to my family and having flexibility.
Throughout my experiences in different jobs, I learned to adapt to change and stay calm in various situations. I believe that working from home can be my stepping stone to a better future. It allows me to save time and money on commuting while working abroad, helping me plan for a time when I can return home and spend more time with my family. My goal is to balance my career and family life, making the most of every opportunity.
