Julient Palayen – ESL Teacher

Hi. My full name is Julient Palayen, living in the northern part, and the breezy mountains of the Philippines, Baguio City. My friends and colleagues call me Shine, and you can call that as well because I am more comfortable with it! I graduated with a degree in Agricultural Engineering with Professional Education from the State University of Benguet. I took my post-graduate at the International Graduate School of Leadership in Manila, Philippines.

For 14 years after my university, I would not have thought of myself working as a local missionary here in Benguet and the entire Luzon of the Philippines. Life is full of surprises and expectations are too far from reality. Working as a missionary is challenging, I guess no work is easy! I was able to meet and communicate with many tribes in my country, and of course, with my tribes as well. I can see poverty and hardships as well as luxury and wealth, the two opposing perspectives in life. Life has allowed me to pray, counsel anyone, and give training like “time management”, “money management”, “True Love Waits’, and “How to Have High Grade” among high school students. This job taught me to love and help everyone in need when able. Helping is never a sin but a way to bless yourself!

Being a local missionary is exciting and thrilling but none of my projects, training, and travels to remote areas, cities, and colleges are free of charge. It requires finances. I became a part-time English Online Teacher. Surprisingly, this job didn’t give me a hard time. I was able to navigate my web pages, the platform, and the hows-to-do with the help of our trainers. This job has sharpened my skills in navigating pages, and challenged my creativity until I got my direct students who want to study with me privately! I prepared my private materials using PowerPoint, Canva, and PDF. I have proven then to myself that I can work alone without no supervision. Give me the task and I will make sure it will be delivered well enough! Nothing is difficult if there is focus, love, and determination in what you are doing.

In January of 2025 I was challenged to manage our family resort business for a short period of time while they were looking for someone fit for the job. My experience working as a part-time missionary helped me adapt easily to the job. One of the most challenging part is to keep the company up-and-running during its downtime season from June to October because it is the rainy season here in the Philippines. I was able to keep the company rolling by increasing its online presence on social media like Facebook Reels, Instagram, and TikTok. Along the way, managers must be innovative and stay updated about the weather conditions, the trends online, and updating your products aligning with what the trend now is! It was stressful, but having the right staff in your company makes your stress nothing to worry about!

Most of my time, my work involves working online, so I decided to work from home to stay close to my family. I aim to grow further with my career, and learn more skills and knowledge along the way to better myself and apply them to both my work and life.
