Milvet Thya Sarabia – Importation and Logistics Officer, Sales Representative

Hi, my name is Milvet Thya Sarabia, and my friends and family call me Thya. I am a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration major in Marketing from the University of the Philippines – Visayas. After I graduated, I did not apply for jobs right away as I somehow worked for my mother who is a College Professor – assisting her with some requirements needed for their university’s accreditation. Growing up, I have always been independent and trusted by my family with errands like withdrawing cash, paying bills, and processing our household documents – even at a young age.

Years after, I worked at Prince Valiant International Corporation. I started as a team member of the Canvassing/Quotation and Bidding Department. My role was to prepare proposals and quotations for our clients, and I took part in the preparation of the bidding department. I used to report directly to the President of the company, where he would request me to provide updates on the bidding opportunities. To be more efficient, I initiated a system via Google Spreadsheet, where all bidding projects to be joined in a week are listed according to priority. It was where we could track the schedule of the Pre-Bid Conferences, Deadline of Submission, and Opening of Bids, as well as to whom the project was assigned to. After 6 months as a member, I was promoted as the Team Leader. I was responsible for training and handling the members of the team – assigning projects and seeing to it that they finish the quotations and bidding documents on time.

After more than a year in the department, I was transferred to the Operations Department and promoted as Logistics Officer. I was in charge of the importation processes of our international orders, ensuring that the documents needed abided by what the Bureau of Customs required. It was such a crucial job, we had to comply with the rules and regulations of the bureau and I had to make sure that the shipments would not encounter any delays. I was also in charge of the deliveries of the orders of our customers, handling the logistics of huge equipment from canvassing freight forwarders to ensuring the delivery receipts and invoice are attached along the cargo, up to monitoring the arrival at the customer.

During my tenure as the Logistics Officer, I was also a part-time Sales Representative, promoting and marketing our products and services to some agencies and universities in Mindanao Region. It was a fulfilling job since I get to interact with different people with different cultures, and I got to explore the adversity of the region.

My tenure at Prince Valiant International Corporation taught me a lot of things – especially to be self-motivated. When you know your skills and capabilities, you will surely find satisfaction in accomplishing the tasks given to you. It is also important to acknowledge your weaknesses and shortcomings, as they will serve as an opportunity to learn and improve yourself.

As much as I enjoyed my job in the company, I had to leave because of its location. It is a 4-5 hours commute from our home and given the Monday-Saturday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM, I didn’t have a lot of chances to go home unless it is a holiday. As I grow older, I realise the importance of family as they are our support system to stay motivated. I wanted to look for other opportunities that will enable me to give back to and spend quality time with my family – and I believe working from home will provide me these privileges.

I also believe that this set up will equip me with knowledge and skills that will enable me to grow both as an individual and as a professional.
