Leela Mae De Zuñiga – Administrative Assistant

My name is Leela Mae Respondo De Zuñiga. I am a wife, a mother, and a proud Bachelor of Science in Accountancy graduate from the Class of 2024. My journey to earning my degree was far from easy, but every challenge I faced shaped me into the strong and determined person I am today.

I started college in 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic, when everything shifted to online learning. For the first two years, all my classes were virtual, which was a huge adjustment. However, it also helped me become more proficient with technology and taught me the importance of discipline, honesty, and productivity in an independent learning setup. By the time I entered my third year in 2022, in-person classes had resumed, and I had to adapt again to the traditional classroom setting after years of learning from a screen.

During my third year of college, I got married unexpectedly. I had always imagined getting married at 28, but life had other plans. Even though it wasn’t the grand wedding I once pictured, it was one of the happiest moments of my life. Then, just a few months later, in December 2023, I found out I was pregnant—right as I was entering my final year of college.

Being pregnant while finishing my degree was one of the biggest challenges I’ve ever faced. I was commuting 20 kilometers to school, leading our research study—which we successfully defended in February 2024—and juggling the demands of an intense accountancy curriculum. On top of all that, I had to take 28 major exams covering seven subjects. It was exhausting and overwhelming at times, but I pushed through, determined to finish what I started.

Looking back, I’m incredibly proud of myself for making it through. It wasn’t easy, but it taught me just how strong and persistent I can be. It may not be an inspiring story for everyone, but for me, it’s proof that I can handle whatever life throws my way.

Right now, I’m focused on taking care of my son, but I’m also eager to start my career and put my skills to use in a real-world setting. I believe I have what it takes to make a difference, and I know that working from home is the best option for me. It allows me to balance my career goals while still being present for my son, giving him the time and attention he needs. As I take this next step, I’m excited for the opportunities ahead and ready to embrace whatever comes my way.
