Kharen M. Kim – Web Designer

kharen-malabat-kim-formalMy name is Kharen Malabat Kim. I was born and raised in the Philippines, but I live in South Korea at the moment. I worked as an English teacher here in South Korea for almost 5 years. It was one of the best things that I’ve experienced in my life.

I hated the feeling whenever I had to leave my kids with my mother-in-law to go to work. So in the year 2018, I started to look for possibilities of being able to work from home. I started searching on the internet and have found web development interesting.

From there, I looked for ways on how to become a web developer and then I signed up in an online learning platform that teaches how to code. It wasn’t easy at first because I don’t have a background in IT or in computer science but I found creating websites really interesting and I think that it is something I will surely enjoy doing. I then learned about WordPress- a CMS platform that allows an individual to create websites that doesn’t always require coding skills, however, you need to have an in-depth understanding of the plugins that you might need to add functionality to the website you are trying to build.

kharen-malabat-kim-vacationI started attending webinars and also signed up to an amazing online learning platform that focuses on teaching CMS based websites and I really enjoyed it. I also learned that having the ability to code as well will help me in customising the look and feel of the website which have made me decide to teach myself to code.

I spent almost a year on learning skills which I think are essential to become a home-based freelancer or a service provider that is reliable and valuable. My goal in learning all of these is not just to earn revenue but to have myself established first, have the deeper understanding of what I will be offering clients in the future because it would really be nice and fulfilling to know that the client will be happy and would love to work with you for the long term because you are giving the best services that you could offer them.

So far these are the skills that I acquired from my year 2018-2019 learning journey:

  • HTML5 (HyperText Markup Language)
  • CSS (Cascading Style Sheet- for design customisation)
  • WordPress (creating a website(s) using Elementor and Brizy, website / page layout and templates customisation)
  • Opencart, Prestashop, and WordPress using Woocomerce plugin for online store.
  • Photoshop (I use in making banners and ads for the website)
  • Premiere Pro (I use for video editing)

And counting… because I believe I should continue learning and trying things out that will help me to become a better, more reliable service provider and a valuable team member.

Thank you for reading my story and I hope you consider my application.
