Maria Genevie Ann Medina – Virtual Assistant, Customer Service Representative

Hi! My name is Maria Genevie Ann Medina. I got a long name but you can call me Gen. I’m 34 years old and the youngest among my three siblings. Some say I am certainly at the right age to marry, but I disagree as we all have our own timeline. Anyway, to tell you a little more about myself and my family. I may be the youngest but I stand as the family’s breadwinner. All of my siblings have their own family, which made me solely responsible for my mother’s needs.

I’ve only worked for one BPO company for the last decade. It was first called NCO then became EGS then now Alorica. With a decade in the company, I was able to work with two of the largest carriers in the United States which are T-Mobile and Verizon. As a customer representative, I experienced answering inbound calls, then tried transferring to chat where I had to handle three active chats all at the same time. The BPO industry requires a fast-paced environment and with that being said, you have to make sure you keep up with the company’s speed.

Pandemic hits 2020, this is when everything stopped due to quarantine. However, BPO is the only company that lets their employees stay in their office to continue supporting clients and keep on working despite the risks of getting Covid-19. A lot happened during this time that I realized family matters most. This is an eye opener for me to ensure my family’s safety by staying at home with them, to keep them from any viruses that I can get if I continue working onsite. Got lucky that I was approved to at least work at home for 2 years. But in 2022, they asked us to go back on-site.

This was a go signal for me to try and dive in to the trend of getting yourself a client and continue working at the comfort of your home. One of my friend then recruited me to be an independent contractor at their company called RodriTech wherein we have to only do outbound calls and set schedules for their hot water installation. The client is Australian-based and it’s certainly giving you a normal schedule as they are only 2 hours earlier than our time. It’s a little sad though as they experience recession and independent contractors are the first in their list that needed to be let go.

Being a virtual assistant during this time is a fierce competition. Given that I do not have that much of an experience. I had to go back working onsite as CoverDesk (VA for insurance agencies) is the only company who provides VA jobs even if you only have a BPO background. After working for 9 months, I missed working at the comfort of my home. Having that long of an experience now, I believe that I already have what it takes to sell myself to clients and gain their trust knowing that I can work under minimal supervision.

My goal is to certainly work and enjoy my free time with my family without having to waste too much time stuck in traffic. I will continue to strive harder to fulfill this dream and be able to share my success in the future.
