Jaymar Pavillar – Customer Support Specialist
I will begin my story when I was still in college. I wanted to become an architect when I was looking for a university to attend. I passed the entrance exam at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, but my parents wanted to return to the province to start a business there. And since I wasn’t used to being away from them, I decided to just go with them and study college there. I found a university to enroll in at the Philippine Normal University and pursued a degree in education. Unfortunately, our business failed, and I couldn’t finish my studies. I needed to help my family to support our daily needs. When I found out that I could no longer continue my college studies, I was extremely worried because I knew I wouldn’t be able to find a decent job without a diploma.
I had a glimmer of hope when I learned that the field of call center work accepts those who did not finish college. One of the outstanding qualities of a teacher I have developed is the use of the English language in communication, which is why I gathered the courage to enter the call center industry. And luckily, I was able to land a job as a Customer Representative for Amazon. As I exposed myself to this kind of field it thought me a lot of skills that are transferable to a Virtual Assistant (VA) role. One of them is effective communication skills. Most of the time, I handled various customer inquiries, requiring clear, concise communication and provide resolution to a given situation. My role was likely focused on providing customer satisfaction, handling complaints, and building connections.
When the pandemic occurred, I had the opportunity to work from home. This provided me with significant financial help because I was able to save money and avoid spending on transportation and unnecessary things. I felt sad that I could no longer continue working from home and had to report to the office. I still tried going to the office, but there are times when I have difficulty commuting. This is where I thought about shifting my career to becoming a Virtual Assistant since I heard that I can do it in the convenience of my home.
