Karlo Carin – ESL Teacher, Virtual Assistant

Hello. My name is Karlo and I’m a virtual assistant from the Philippines.

In my professional career, I started as an English teacher in a private high school. I also worked part-time as a college Literature instructor.
Eventually, I became a public high school teacher. Aside from English, I taught the following subjects: Values Education, Creative Writing, MAPEH (Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health), and Cookery.

In 2020, during the height of the pandemic, I resigned as a public school teacher and worked remotely as an ESL Teacher for Japanese students. After that, I helped my family with business. My father is a Civil Engineer and runs his own construction business where I was able to help with some of the management. My mother and sister make and sell customised cakes. There, I helped with baking, sourcing ingredients, and deliveries.

Recently, we decided that we need more sources of income where I can use the many skills I’ve built throughout the years. I decided to become a virtual assistant. Just a week ago, I was able to complete my VA Masterclass training and now I am looking for work.

I spend most of my free time with my family or playing video games with my friends. All of my family members love to cook, so we usually take turns making meals. Every single one of us has a specialty, and I’m the one who is always designated to make adobo whenever somebody is craving it. As for video games, I enjoy playing Overwatch 2 the most. It’s a competitive multiplayer shooter game. I don’t only play it because it’s fun, but because it involves a lot of skill. The game is very complex. One doesn’t simply win by pure aim mechanics alone, but there are so many layers of strategy. There’s always teamwork involved. Playing this game reminds me so much of real life: It would be in your best interest to be smart about how you use all the tools you’re given and play to your own and your team’s strengths.

My most recent obsession is building mechanical keyboards. It’s somewhat an expensive hobby, but some perks come with being a childless single adult. So far, I own 7 mechanical keyboards – some of them I’ve “built” myself. Building a mechanical keyboard just means choosing the parts you want according to your preference and assembling them to create something that fits your preference. I prefer keyboards with an aluminium body, buttery smooth linear switches, and a deep sound profile.

As you can see, I didn’t talk about personal ambitions or big aspirations. All I want in life is to live quietly and comfortably. I want to make just enough money to afford a simple yet comfortable lifestyle. This may change over the years to come, but for now, I am enjoying how slow yet productive my life has been lately.

That’s all I can share about myself for now! Thank you for reading!
