Liza Monsing – Administrative Assistant, Accounting, ESL

Liza-May-Monsing-vaI am Liza May Monsing. Most of my friends call me “Liz” or “ Mons”. I studied elementary and high school near my hometown and graduated as Class Valedictorian in both levels. I can say that I was a very hardworking and competitive student during those times because I did not want to fail my teachers and my parents’ expectation of me. Also, I was running for a scholarship in college because it was my desire to finish my studies and to have a degree. I also wanted to prove that poverty is not a hindrance towards success as our family was under the poverty line.

Before enrolling in college, I always thought of what should be the course that I’m going to take in college. Ever since my favorite subject in school was Math. And so, my course should be math related but I did not want to be a math teacher either. And so, I decided to take a bachelor’s degree in accounting at the University of Mindanao-Digos College. I got the desire to work in a certain government agency someday and so I decided to take the Civil Service Examination (Professional Level) in 2018 and as a result of studying night and day, I passed the exam.

Right after my graduation, out of all applicants, I was chosen to fill the position of Junior Accounting Clerk in a certain financing firm called First Standard Finance Corporation despite having no experience. My colleagues and manager praised me for fixing the problem in terms of their Bank Reconciliation Reports status in previous years. I also did daily cash position reports, forecasted weekly cash position reports, income statement schedule, due from/ due to branches scheduling, and issuing the client’s full payment certificate and client’s history of payments. Due to my hard work and dedication, I was awarded as one of the Most Outstanding Employees for the Year 2019.

Liza-May-Monsing-vaAfter 19 months of being a Junior Accounting Clerk, the branch manager, and the district HR manager offered me another position called Accounts Monitoring Clerk and I accepted it without hesitation. The job roles are conducting collection guidelines to new clients, following up delinquent accounts, receiving cash repayment/ over the counter, house to house client’s visitation, preparing monthly delinquent accounts report, preparing documents for client’s voluntary surrender of units, and offering remedial to delinquent accounts.

When the pandemic occurred, our company was greatly affected. And so, we were mandated to just report to the office about 3 times a week which resulted in lesser pay. Due to that matter, I could no longer afford my expenses and support my family. And so, I needed to find greener pastures. For more than 2 years of working with this company, I learned so many things and gained memories with my colleagues.

Numerous applications I made but no one had tried to reach me out until one time when I saw a certain Facebook post stating that they were looking for online tutors in 51Talk English International Limited. When I saw the salary rate, without hesitation, I applied. Despite the difficult application process and training, I fortunately passed and became a tutor. My students are Chinese who are willing to learn English. I never thought in my life that I would love teaching. I could also say that learning new things is one of my passions. Everything went well until the Chinese government established a policy called the “Double Reduction Policy”. In this policy, all online private tutoring companies offering tutorial services to kids were banned. With heartaches, I have to find another job again. Most of my co-teachers tried to explore the freelancing world. Out of curiosity and willingness to learn new things, I want to try it too. If you have seen this letter of mine, please be my client and I will assure you that you will never fail your expectation towards me.
