Oliver Tabaquero – Quantity Surveyor

oliver-john-tabaquero-vaI’m Oliver. I’m a graduate of Civil Engineering from Tarlac State University. After working on getting my professional license, I started my career with AAA company in which we built the ₱3.2 billion NCC to SCTEX access road, which was a requirement when the Philippines hosted the 2019 SEA Games. After working on the site for some months, the management wanted me to work with the Project Manager to speed up the process of the billing as resources are one of the typical hindrances of construction projects. That is where I began my career as an estimator. Working with PDFs and DWGs to employ calculations on Excel.

After my stint there, I opted to work for a budding company in the province of Tarlac. I worked as a Quantity Surveyor but my role did not stop there. I was in-charge of budget, quantities, schedules, and facilitating meetings with our personnel along with the Project Engineer. I even got a chance to helm my own project. I worked with both vertical projects and horizontal projects, even got to the time when I was directly contacting the client for one of the projects. Additionally, I also contributed to the rise of their Batching Plant, where I drew up some plans on AutoCAD and practiced some of the things I learned when I was reviewing for the Materials Engineer exam.

Before the pandemic, I was looking to change course in my career. I wanted to move from construction to design. I was adding structural design in my arsenal of skills. Unfortunately, COVID-19 made everyone take a pause.

oliver-john-tabaquero-vaI was stuck at home for months. Like the rest of the world, I also took a breather. I read books. I got a new hobby which was cooking.

I found freelancing when I was looking for jobs, which were adjusting to the work from home setup. I was using Bluebeam and Planswift before and I studied them even more to gain better proficiency.

Working with this US-based contractor had some challenges. Aside from working night shifts, I was also now working with contracts and understanding how things worked. Despite the challenges, working with US projects gave me a better understanding of the construction industry and how you could procure projects while maintaining harmonious relationships with your client, personnel, subcontractors, and suppliers.

Right now, I am working on my skillset as I look to go beyond the Civil Engineering profession and shape my overall career on a more holistic outlook. My initiative to always find ways on how to do things and constantly better myself to take on new challenges will be the assets I can contribute to your organization.

I’m looking forward to work with your awesome team.
