Helen Sedigo – Social Media Manager, Administrative Assistant

helen-rose-sedigo-vaHi! My name is Helen Rose E. Sedigo, the eldest daughter of a family in Dumaguete City. I currently reside and live independently here in Cebu.

At a young age, I witnessed how difficult life is, given the situation that we were in. My mum had to raise me and my other two siblings alone, as we stayed clear of my father who was a known womaniser. It’s encouraging to think we made it this far despite the unfortunate situation we were in back then. It makes me think that as a woman, I should be the hardworking eldest in our family in order to help my loved ones achieve their dreams.

As a kid, I always dreamed of working in a corporate job related to designing and writing. But because of our financial situation, I could not afford to pursue my dreams. I could not delay my studies because I still had two other siblings relying on me. But despite all of this, I don’t regret how my life has turned out.

When I turned 18, I started pursuing several online jobs. I have worked in several different industries – as an English Teacher, Remote Curriculum Consultant for an ESL Company, Virtual Assistant, Content Writer and Social Media Manager. Back then, work-life was a challenge as I had no skills and knew nothing! I had to learn on my own.

Being an English Teacher for an ESL Company opened a lot of opportunities for me. I worked while studying. During my vacant time, I would go back to my apartment in order to utilise my time working. I had to travel back and forth in order not to miss classes since it was a work from home company. I have never tried working for a physical company. Actually, I dreamed of working for one at one stage, but I was promoted as a Remote Curriculum Consultant. I aided with drafting ESL lessons to be used in the platform for teaching. This was my work until I graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education Major in English.

I managed emails, analysed and fixed landing pages using several tools, scheduled booking, aided in website designing and many other tasks.

From then, I made my way to becoming a content writer for websites and social media for a digital consultancy company based in the United Kingdom. The work was flexible, and I always had a heart for writing. I wrote content anonymously for the different accounts the company handles.

Since it was in line with Social Media, I had to study the basics of Social Media ─ designing, scheduling and posting, content management and everything related to Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. Then, I was hired by several companies to handle their social media accounts. I have worked with a coaching company, a financial consultancy, and an electronic company based in China.

With the many industries that I worked for, I learned how to value and apply importance to everything that I do. Regardless of how big or small tasks, projects and services are, I provide value to them because they helped me become who I am today.

Life can be tough… however, I realised that if I wasn’t given any difficult situations back as a child, I would not have become as strong as I am today. I would not have learned anything. I may not have learned these skills if it weren’t for the urgent need to get a job back then. Therefore I am grateful for my past and my present.
