Mariel Oliveros – Virtual Assistant, Data Entry Specialist

Hello, my name is Mariel Oliveros, and I usually go by my nickname Yella. I am a wife and a mom of a bright 8-year-old boy. I graduated with a degree in Business Management with a Major in Operations Management at Pangasinan State University in 2013. After which, I pursued being a part of the BPO industry as a customer service representative.

Just a few weeks before my graduation, a company visited us and conducted a recruitment event. I got so fascinated about the stories the recruiter shared, which led me to find myself in that same company working as an inbound customer service representative. That kickstarted my career in the BPO industry where I learned a lot and developed the skills I am still using today. Aside from the technical skills and the basic skills like multitasking, time management, adaptability, and teamwork, all of which are required in working in a high-pressured job (which I enjoy a lot!). I have a knack in leadership and I got the chance to develop that as well. I believe the 2 most important things I got working in the industry would be developing my patience and showcasing the right attitude at all times. You see, I can learn fast and I love to share knowledge and help micro-manage the team. Being patient, and still showing a good attitude while working under a lot of stress and pressure is something different. And I take pride in having those skills which I believe is one of the keys to be successful in my chosen career.

After working in the BPO industry for 3 years, I tried my luck abroad in 2018. I went to Saudi Arabia and worked as a nanny for 4 years and 9 months. I got exposed to a very different language and culture. I got all around, from cleaning to cooking and babysitting with regular English tutoring and in return, I learned how to cook Middle Eastern cuisine and speak a bit of Arabic. Now I should mention that without the skills I developed when I was in the BPO industry I would not have survived what I have gone through.

Then it was time for me to get an upgrade. I got the opportunity to work remotely for a few months and I loved it. I searched and searched for a way to keep working like this because when working remotely as in doing so I will have everything I need. I don’t need to stay hundreds of miles away from my family just to put food on the table. Plus, I get to spend time with the people most important to me without compromising my job. At the end of the day, what matters most is that you get the job done, and on time.

Surely, I do miss working face-to-face with people but this is the setup that works for me and my family. After all I have been through, I never forgot where I came from, and how it all started. I aim to take a step further and continue building a career in this field I have chosen, acquire more skills and knowledge and develop the ones I already have.

As Doris Lessing would say, “Any human anywhere will bloom in a hundred unexpected talents and capacities simply by being given the opportunity to do so.”
