Victor Roca – Sales, Administrative Assistant

victor-roca-vaHello, my name is Victor Roca. I come from the south of the Philippines. I learned at a very young age to sell food on the street to help my family. It did not deter me from going to school and I was an honour student.

In the middle of finishing my college education, I joined an International Mission Organisation called YWAM. I worked in the slums of Manila, feeding the children and teaching the youth. I was also involved with the prison ministry. It was a joy to see the fruits of our labour as some of those youths we helped are now professionals. One guy that I had discipled in the prison is now a pastor. Working with different cultures and nationalities has moulded my mind to be diplomatic and to listen with passion and care. It had taught me many principles especially being detailed conscious.

I resigned from the mission organisation and went to America. I worked in a company that manufactures residential and commercial lighting products. I was the warehouse coordinator and eventually became technical support and customer care. I moved to another company and became the warehouse manager. My task is day-to-day operation, customer care and technical support including our online store with Amazon Web Central.

victor-roca-vaI finally worked in a retail store for lighting products. Working in a daily live conversation with walk-in clients attracted me. I handled customer care and technical support. My work had progressed to major buildings in New York. I handled lighting projects like Four Seasons Hotel in midtown New York, SAPIR of Madison Ave, the Paul Hotel near Flatiron and many more.

Dealing with contractors, project engineers, architects, interior designers, owners and technical support was a big challenge. Everything must be checked, double-checked and rechecked to avoid confusion and problems. Time is crucial and there is no room for mistakes. When I am under pressure, I remain calm when problems arise, and I focus on solutions. My father taught me in life, don’t do just right but do the best you can.

The mission group I had joined in the past reminds me of these verses and it helps me to focus

“… whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Philippians 4:8
