Akpoveta Egere – Information Technology

akpoveta-egere-vaI am Akpoveta Egere, but I prefer Veta because it is easier to pronounce. I’m excited to write about my journey; this is actually the first time I have been asked to write about my journey.

I hail from Uvwie Local Government Area, Delta State in the South-South region of Nigeria. It is one of the oil producing states so the decision to study Petroleum Engineering was kind of linear, but life, as we know, had a different path carved out for me. What started as a detour while job hunting after graduation turned into an adventure into the world of IT support, system administration, project management, and even as a Scrum Master for the sales team, bid/tender team, and marketing team. I never thought I would be doing this now, but in retrospect, it is what I should be doing based on deciding factors: my love for computers and the fact that I am a problem-solver. I am thriving in a career that lets me solve problems, help businesses run smoothly, and learn things along the way.

My IT journey wasn’t exactly linear. The decision not to be idle and a willingness to adapt led me here. Most skills I have were learnt on the job and I’ve gotten some trainings and certifications to build a solid foundation, earning credentials like the Microsoft IT Support Specialist, Atlassian Agile Project Management Professional Certificate. These certifications further confirm my skills in working with Microsoft ecosystems, Office 365, Azure, Jira and Confluence. I am currently taking the Google Cloud Cybersecurity Professional Certificate course on Coursera and Business Analysis next. I am committed to upskilling as the industry constantly growing.

akpoveta-egere-vaBut it’s not just about the technical activities for me. I enjoy connecting with people and making IT less intimidating. I believe in breaking down complex concepts into relatable terms in situations where I am explaining to a non-technical user or collaborating with a team to implement IT strategies. I believe great customer service and clear communication are just as important as technical know-how to be a great IT Support Specialist. Also loving what you do gives one the drive to go over and beyond to get the job done.

I am grateful for how far I’ve come. Life through IT has given me the opportunity to combine my problem-solving mindset, technical skills and love for helping others into a career that feels meaningful. I am thrilled to keep growing, take on new challenges, and contribute to innovative projects in the ever-changing world of technology.

I look forward to expanding my skills, embracing new challenges, and contributing to innovative projects in the IT field.
