Genesis Omandam – Customer Service, Technical Designer

Hi! My name is Genesis Omandam. You can call me Genesis or Gen. I was born in June of 1987 on a small beautiful island of the Philippines called Cebu. I am the youngest of 5. I graduated with a degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering from the University of San Carlos. Unfortunately, I did not pass my Licensure Exam here in the Philippines. But it’s ok because I was brought by fate to what I really loved doing since high school and that is …. Drawings! Although it took me months to land my first job it’s all worth it and I also did not disappoint the company that I had work with.

My first job after college was back in 2011 in a BPO company. Their services were about residential drafting mainly on roof measurements for insurance purposes. It was a really fun working environment. After 6 months, I did not expect to be promoted as a Team Leader and it was such a humbling experience. After a year in the company, a friend referred me to a work-from-home kind of job with more technical drawings. And so, I just took it.

To my knowledge, there was no such thing as a “Virtual Assistant” back in 2012. I was working as a sub-contractor for a U.S Company. So basically, I was working from home since 2012. And I loved it! That’s when I started working for an industrial design company focusing on wine cellar designs. I started as a pre-sale designer working on specific requests from a client to be drawn or drafted. Again, I was promoted to another position within 4 months since I started. I was working as a Rack Designer wherein we design accurately, piece by piece the parts needed for the actual wine racks to be sent for production. And in 2015, I was promoted to Senior Rack Designer and the rest is history. Until the company shut down this year, 2022.

What I’ve realised is that working all those years for a company that I only interacted with online is really possible as long as you’re diligent in your work, resourceful, and also give your respect and trust to the company that you are working for. Right now, being a Virtual Assistant is one of the best jobs you could have. You could spend time with your family, able to provide for them while working at the expense of your own home. Working from home has a lot of benefits aside from expenses like transportation and eating at work. Like what I did, you can invest in learning more skills in your free time. From working at home over the past 10 years, I now know new editing tools like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Premiere. I learned new CAD software also like Sketchup Pro and Solidworks. Aside from computer stuff, I now know advanced techniques in playing the guitar, and learned Muay Thai, Boxing, and Freediving! Isn’t that amazing?

If the opportunity comes, with all my skills through being a Virtual Assistant, I will still aim to provide the best of what I can do and will never stop learning new skills along the way just for the betterment of not just me but also the company.
