Jonathan Martin Ortiz – Administrative Assistant, Customer Service Representative
Hi, I am Jonathan Martin Lacerna Ortiz, or Jace for short. I recently graduated with a degree in Nursing from PHINMA Cagayan de Oro College last May 2024. After graduation, I’d always hoped that I would take the licensure examination to be registered as a nurse, but due to reasons and life itself, I decided to not pursue a career in the healthcare setting, however that doesn’t mean that I can’t put my education to good use, I immediately thought of ways for me to utilize the knowledge and skills I honed while learning to become a nurse, and throughout my time in nursing school, I was not only immersed in medical knowledge but also in the importance of empathy, communication, and patience. I gained hands-on experience in clinical settings, which strengthened my desire to help others. Nursing, for me, has always been about providing care with compassion, and it was a goal I was determined to pursue.
Before graduating, I was already working as a virtual assistant part-time for a few months, my time with the role was brief, but I was able to develop new skills such as in time management, communication, and multitasking, as well as a deeper understanding of technology and the demands of remote work. This role allowed me to interact with diverse clients or people and handle various tasks, including managing schedules, organising data, and answering client inquiries. I found that my background in nursing, which had trained me to be detail-oriented, compassionate, and proactive, helped me excel in this virtual environment.
A few weeks after my graduation, I decided to transition into the BPO industry as a customer service representative, which is where I currently work still, and in my experience, this job has further refined my customer service and problem-solving skills. Working in this fast-paced and dynamic environment has taught me the importance of adaptability, patience, and effective communication—skills that are transferable to many areas of professional life.
Though my path may not have followed the traditional route of becoming a registered nurse, I am proud of the experiences I’ve gained. I am confident that these diverse skills and experiences will enable me to contribute meaningfully to any future endeavors, whether in healthcare, customer service, or beyond. I remain committed to my one true goal, which is to be successful in furthering my career, to support my family, and to grow as a person, and I shall continue to learn and grow as I navigate life with this new journey I am embarking on.
