Michele Karnani – Account Manager, Content Writing, ESL
The best job in the world is one that you love doing.
My dream job was to become an astronaut. Who would take that seriously? Eventually, I decided I wanted to become a doctor. So, I took a degree in Biology from the University of the Philippines. However, I had to face the fact that my parents could not afford to send me to a medical school. I had to proceed to plan B, which was non-existent at that time. My family relied solely on me. I struggled with what job I wanted to pursue. I thought my entire career was a mess. After looking at it from a brand new perspective, I realised everything was in place.
I landed as a medical representative for my first job. I wasn’t sure about sales then, but it was the only lucrative job I knew. My work involved attracting new clients, profiling prospects, creating proposals, negotiating and closing, providing after-sales services, maintaining business relationships, and organising events, among others. My experience was valuable. I also loved the perks of being in sales – a great deal of money, traveling, driving my car, and providing sufficiently for my family. I couldn’t be any more grateful for the companies and people that trusted and patiently equipped me within my 10-year experience in sales, both in the healthcare and IT-software industries.
Eventually, I started seeking more meaning in life. I volunteered as a Sunday catechist to children in my local parish. It influenced me to endeavor in the field of education. I underwent an 18-unit education program, which entitled me to take the licensure examination. Fortunately, I got my state license as a professional teacher. At the same time, I worked as an English teacher to Japanese professionals in a face-to-face setting. I did not only impart my knowledge of the English language but also my experience in corporate sales. A teaching job is not as bankable as being in sales, but the fulfillment it brings is beyond any riches.
I started exploring the world of freelancing when I got married and became a mother. It gave me a new outlook on life and career. I want to take care of my son first-hand, yet I want to give him everything he needs – from his favourite toys and nice clothes to good education and life insurance.
I acquired skills in content writing, WordPress, search engine optimisation (SEO), and Photoshop. Although limited, I believe that I have a working knowledge of these skills. Luckily, I found a flexible job where I provided content writing, research, and data encoding services to a US-based company. It enabled me to juggle housework and babysitting. I am working on my competencies through a personal website. I also aim to master social media management, including Facebook and LinkedIn Ads. I wish to be of any help to businesses across the world.
PS: I learned that an astronaut job is a real one. Sadly, it is not for me.
