Marivic Madayag – Administrative Assistant, Project Management

marivic-madayag-vaLife in general has taken me through its hoops and loops. One might say that this goes for my professional life as well. My virtual freelance career started as an article writer and progressed through project management, all the while learning and mastering the tools required for each task.

As a virtual assistant, I was a project manager for a similar company to VAT, did content writing, customer chat support, and social media management for an e-commerce company and did back-office administrative work for several coaches.

However, I started out as an IT professional back in the ‘80s, programming for mini computers and mainframes. At some point in the late ‘80s, I had this nagging feeling of wanting to do more. At that point in my career, I felt I could go no further up the corporate ladder. I was increasingly drawn to social development work. So I started applying for positions related to community development, mostly with private foundations.

Being a graduate of a business course, with work experience only in IT, I kept receiving rejection after rejection. I had all but given up.

marivic-madayag-vaA position for a computer systems analyst came up for a task force, created by the Philippine government to address the problems suffered by the victims of the Mount Pinatubo eruption in 1991, for which I applied, thinking that this was the closest I could get to. During my interview, I related my wish for my job to be as close as possible to social development. Luckily, a position for a Technical Assistant for Settlements was open and for which I was hired.

Hence started my journey in social development. Working with various projects, mostly foreign funded, my tasks included grant project proposal writing, project management and monitoring and evaluation.

Why do I take you through this long journey?

With each of the jobs I have held in the past, I have used whatever skills were required but also the burning desire to help – to improve on the status quo. My ultimate goal is to help grow my clients’ businesses using my collective experience and freeing up their time for more productive pursuits.

I bring to every task the maturity and professionalism that characterises my professional life.

PS. I am a single parent, having brought up of 3 God-fearing, adult children. This I consider to be another feather to my cap, if I may say so. Cheers.
